Grieving together during COVID-19

Grieving together during COVID-19

Amongst the horrifying statistics of over 34,000 deaths across the UK as a result of the coronavirus, a recent BBC article shared the sad yet uplifting story of the Gompertz family and how they have created a national movement to recognise and celebrate friends and family who have died as a result of COVID-19.

Following the death of Sheila, a wife, mother and grandmother – the family wanted to find a way to share their grief and signal that they were grieving – to ensure that Sheila wasn’t forgotten.

Given the restraints of lockdown, they came up with the idea of sharing a yellow heart in your window.

Sheila’s granddaughters took this further and set up a Facebook Group and hashtag #loveforthelost for those in a similar situation to share their stories.  Since then, it has taken off – Sheila’s husband David summed it up, “we’ve hit a nerve – this is what people are looking for.”

The Facebook page has over 5,000 followers and is an incredible space for people to share their stories, thoughts and gain support in their grief.  Feeling brave enough to post in the group and share the loss of loved ones has helped many to feel less isolated, find like-minded contacts and have their grief acknowledged.

Like many stories emerging from the impact of the coronavirus, rather than respond with fear and anger; kindness and compassion and an overwhelming sense of community have helped many people suffering the devastating impact of the virus.
